Water

Microbiology

  • Microbiology basics: bacteria, algae, fungi & protozoa. How quick can they grow? What’s a biofilm anyway?

Laboratory

  • Basic laboratory technique: how to achieve valid and repeatable results

Regulatory

  • Ms. Kristen Sayers of the NYSDOH Saranac Lake District Office will review E. coli sampling techniques,  testing, hold-times, test frequency and the purpose of the LT2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule  (LT2ESWTR) that is being implemented in October of 2008.
  • Mr. Paul Kaczmarzyk, of the NYSDOH Bureau of Water Supply Protection in Troy , New York will discuss the  Bureau’s on-going research into source water protection issues and pending regulations to protect ground  and surface water supplies.

Aquatic Plant

  • Controlling aquatic vegetation, obtaining aquatic vegetation control permits & the environmental effects of copper in the aquatic food chain. 

Safety

  • Mr. Chris Caron of American Safety Supply, Inc will review the selection, use and maintenance of personal   protective equipment and interpreting Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Slack Chemical Company representatives will discuss the safe use, application and storage of sodium hypochlorite, potassium permanganate, strong acids, bases and NSF approved treatment chemicals.

Miscellaneous

  • Math review: dilutions, system volumes, etc.  It’s not glamorous, but you need your algebra at times
  • Chemical feed pumps: their sizing, application and maintenance
