Water

• Its properties, natural contaminants and problem characteristics
• Make it taste better: treating to remove iron, sulfur, hardness, particulates & other contaminants
• The selection, theory & use of NSF approved corrosion inhibitors, sequestriants & chemical softening agents

Microbiology

• Dr. David M. Dziewulski of the NYS Bureau of Public Water Supply Protection will speak on Legionella group bacteria and Legionnaires disease – the environmental sources, ecology, routes of infection and the approved techniques to treat domestic hot-water systems and evaporative cooling towers.
• Microbiology basics: bacteria, algae, fungi & protozoa. How quick can they grow? What’s a biofilm anyway?
• How can I have coliform bacteria even though I have a chlorine residual? It’s possible - a case study
• Differentiating between human and animal waste in potable and non-potable water supplies

Laboratory

• Basic laboratory technique: how to achieve valid and repeatable results
• Testing for Total and Fecal coliform group bacteria – a review of their significance and applications
• Is this thing working? Getting your DPD test, pH meter, turbidimeter, etc. to function as expected
• Interpreting your laboratory reports: what do the results mean? Do I have a violation?
• Sampling techniques for water & wastewater: coliforms, VOCs, BODs, TSS, etc.  How to do it right

Disinfection

• Chlorine:  its chemistry, application, limitations and how its properties may affect your water supply 
• Alternatives to chlorine: can ultraviolet light or ozone disinfection work for you?

Environmental

• Mr. John Bennett and Mr. Sam Jacklyn of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation will speak on the subject of pesticides and groundwater contamination.

Equipment and Safety

• Mr. Wayne Bennett, of Northeast Pump & Instrument will discuss the selection, use & maintenance of chemical feed pumps, oxidation reduction potential (ORP) controllers and pH monitoring systems.

• Mr. Chris Jay of the NYS Department of Labor provides training on work place safety, safe chemical handling and interpreting material safety data sheets (MSDS).
